“The Talk”: A Guide to Family Communication on Aging (Part 2) @ Zoom
Jan 14 @ 4:00 pm

Are you making plans for the future? Is it time to have “The Talk”? Sometimes initiating or discussing these plans with our support system can present challenges. This event has been created to help us all have a succesful conversation around our needs, aging and a future we want.

Part 1 is geared towards those that are already retired or in their later years and are looking to make plans or discuss their plans with their support system. Learn how to let others know your decisions so they don’t make them for you!

Part 2 is geared towards the adult children (or the supportive caregiver) of those in their later years and how to collaborate with them in making plans together for their future.

This is a very special event to make sure our support systems are set and ready to help our wonderful seniors have a future they want!

Feel free to share this event with your loved ones so that they can join in on the conversation, too.

This film highlights an essential, yet largely unseen workforce—the family caregivers of America, and challenges viewers to acknowledge the growing strain placed on them. We must find another way.

For older adults.
We are all born with the capacity to engage with the world creatively but most people don’t think they are an artist. How does your inner artist show up?
Wisdom Cafes invite groups of older adults to engage in intentional dialogues led by trained facilitators. Participants engage with others, are motivated to try new things and are inspired by sharing life experiences.

Topic: Aging is a process in which all individuals either passively or actively participate. While a decline in physical ability is inevitable to some degree, many variables remain in one’s control and can tip the scales in favor of maximizing physical independence over time.

This session will address ways to optimize movement across the aging spectrum, addressing limitations that lead to a decline in physical independence. Too often for the aging adult and their families, this is a predominant factor determining the appropriate level of care. Ways to apply key concepts will be provided to participants for their target populations for a variety of settings from complete independent living to the skilled level of care.

Objectives

  • Understand a model of what successful physical aging looks like

  • Identify the key elements of balance control and fall prevention

  • Apply three action steps for your setting or population to promote successful physical aging

Speaker: Matt Whitaker, MPT received his professional degree in 1998 from Loma Linda University. His first 9 years of practice was in neurologic rehabilitation with a focus on vestibular and balance dysfunctions, which he continues to have a special interest in treating. Over the past 13 years his area of care has concentrated largely on orthopedic care. He has practiced in all levels of care within the healthcare system. Outside of treating patients, Matt has taught physical therapy students in the clinic and the classroom, lectured to medical students and residents, provided post-graduate continuing education training to physical therapists, directed therapy programs for two hospitals, and owned a private physical therapy practice prior to establishing, and co-owning Evolve Physical Therapy with locations in Sherwood and Bethany. Important information about CEU Credits: Oregon Health Authority no longer pre-approves CEU’s.
