AARP Smart Driver Courses Offered for Washington County Residents in May 2015

The AARP Smart Driver Course is the nation’s largest classroom and on-line driver safety program and is designed for individuals age 50 and older, but all ages are welcome.  In Oregon, participates may be eligible for a multi-year auto insurance discount upon course completion as mandated by ORS 742.490. Please contact your insurance agent and/or carrier.

As a recipient of the communication, we are forwarding some very important information and request you share this data with your clientele and if possible, display it in a conspicuous place. If you offer a publication (newsletter, bulletin, etc.) would you please include this information in same?  Instruction is offered in either one six hour block or two three hour seasons.
Costs are:  $15.00 for AARP Members and $20.00 for Non-AARP Members.  The curriculum is also offered in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

AARP strongly hopes to assist elders to drive as long as they can safely do so.  We inform attendees in new State laws, unique road conditions, road signs, vehicle changes, safety measures, physical changes in our bodies, etc.  As a sub-set, we offer a special class to audiences addressing “When Is It Time To Have A Talk?”.  Here, we discuss when is the appropriate time to discontinue driving (a very sensitive discourse). There is no charge for this presentation; it lasts 1 & 1/2 hours and can be scheduled at a local Senior Center, Church, etc.  To request this program, please contact the undersigned directly.

DID YOU KNOW? – AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE is designed to help you – LEARN research-based safety strategies that can reduce the likelihood of having a crash; UNDERSTAND the links among the driver, vehicle and road environment, and how this awareness encourages safer behavior; LEARN how aging, medications, alcohol and other health-related issues affect driving ability, and ways to adjust to allow for these changes.

For information about class locations and dates and to sign up, please call the phone number on the attachment; and for on-line offerings, please (1) go to www.aarp.org/drive, or (2) call 1-888-227-7669.
