CarePatrol Opens New Location in Portland to Help Families Find the Right Care Solutions for Their Loved Ones

Finding the right senior care options for a loved one, especially after a hospitalization or health change, is daunting. From the individualism of independent living, the security of assisted living, and even specialized memory care, the options can feel overwhelming, especially when time is of the essence. CarePatrol’s senior care advisory services offer tailored support to find high-quality senior care solutions at no cost to the families and older adults they help.

New owners Michelle and Eric Kominsky understand the challenges that families often face when seeking appropriate care for their loved ones, and they are both honored and humbled to give families peace of mind during a stressful time of transition in their lives. “Navigating this new terrain can be extremely challenging and confusing,” says Eric. “It’s our pleasure to provide the clarity and support people need to make the right decisions.”

Michelle and Eric are proud to be part of a network of CarePatrol Local Senior Care Advisors who understand the aging process and how health, social and financial concerns work together to influence outcomes. Krista Davis Tonn Memorial Scholarship – BIG GIVE DAY

Krista Davis Tonn, at age 27, was one of the founding members of Metropolitan Senior Network, when established in 2001. She served on the first Board of Directors and many years following; as well as represented the MSN core principles: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Engagement in every aspect of her life. She was a tireless volunteer with an uncanny ability to organize, encourage, and inspire others to join her endeavors. An award in her honor was established in 2009; and that award was converted to an annual scholarship program starting in the Spring of 2022. MSN’s goal is to support and promote individuals pursuing a career that compliments the senior industry, one of Krista’s demonstrated passions.

This year we are honoring those that donate $350 or more during this fundraising drive – between Oct. 2 – 9, to attend a reception at the new Watermark at the Pearl community. It will be on Oct. 10, from 4-6pm. 1540 NW 13th Ave, Portland 97209 any questions please contact Jenn Buman 503-487-7245.

Donations sought for Neo-Natal Intensive Care families

The Tacoma Police Department and its community partners are preparing again to gift parents and families at St. Joseph Hospital’s Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Donated items are being accepted for this expression of love and care for the tiny NICU babies and their loved ones, and you can find the wish list below.

Organized by Tacoma Police Community Engagement Senior Manager Bervin Smith, he enlists the support of attorney Liz Johnson to spearhead the giveaways. This isn’t the first time for it either. This past April, an army of helpers went to St. Joseph with all kinds of things to help bring a bit of happiness to the NICU parents and caregivers and the appreciation can be seen in their smiles and words of gratitude. The Tacoma Weekly was there and give this report.

Here is the wish list Johnson shared:

Insulated lunch bags

Ice packs

Hairbrushes

Toothbrushes

Toothpaste

Hair ties

Snack bars

Flavored water packets

Baby books

ORCA cards

Journals

Gift cards (including for Door Dash, Uber Eats)

Clear/small plastic pouch (like a pencil bag size for toothbrush, hygiene items)

Blankets

Baby toys

To order any of these items from Amazon for deliver to a volunteer, go to: https://www.amazon.com/hz/ wishlist/ls/2IM7R6CLVTJFD?ref_ =wl_share.

Items not purchased through Amazon can be dropped off at Johnson’s office: Liz Ann Johnson Elder Law, 6711 Regents Blvd., Suite A, University Place, WA 98466. Hours there are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Johnson asks to please drop items off by July 29 at 3 p.m. For additional info or questions, call (253) 340-2193.

Generous local businesses have already donated including movie tickets from The Grand Cinema and a gift card from the Lobster Shop.

“Some of these families are at the NICU for months so it’s great if they can go out for minute,” Johnson said. “Reconnecting and getting out of the hospital for a while is really nice for them.”

Liz Johnson will lead a visit the NICU on July 30 at 1 p.m. to present the gifts. The community is welcome to bring donations then as well.

Macy Senat, an NICU Parent Advocate at St. Joseph, explained how the gifts are distributed once Johnson and her team take them to the hospital.

“How we dole things out is by rooms. We’ll take a bag to each parent that comes through the NICU, and we’ll place items in the parent lounge and that’s open 24 hours, so parents are able to come in, refresh, and recoup from the day or night. All of it will be used and it goes pretty quickly,” Senat said.

“It’s so wonderful that we have the opportunity to get these items, and it’s not just about the items but also the support from the community.”

As well as those who are unhoused and who work outdoors for extended periods of time.

Cogir Art Walk

Cogir had a very successful ArtWalk event last Monday. Residents had the opportunity to share some of their works from the past and present. The engagement from the residents’ families was heartwarming. Having the support and love of the community is also more than we could expect. Art is such an important part of what we do here at Cogir of Northgate Memory Care. Art provides a non-verbal means of expression, allowing individuals with dementia to communicate their feelings, thoughts, and memories when verbal communication becomes difficult. Engaging in art activities can stimulate memories and encourage reminiscence, helping individuals with dementia reconnect with their past experiences and identities. Art has been shown to have therapeutic effects on emotional well-being. Creating art can reduce stress, anxiety, and agitation, while promoting relaxation and a sense of accomplishment. Participating in art activities can help maintain cognitive function by stimulating different areas of the brain. This stimulation can slow cognitive decline and enhance cognitive abilities such as attention, concentration, and problem-solving skills. Art programs provide opportunities for social interaction and engagement with peers, caregivers, and artists. These interactions can reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness often experienced by individuals with dementia. Engaging in creative activities gives individuals with dementia a sense of purpose and identity beyond their diagnosis. It allows them to maintain a sense of autonomy and control over their lives. Art activities empower individuals with dementia by focusing on their abilities rather than disabilities. It allows them to express themselves and make choices, fostering a sense of independence and self-worth. Art activities empower individuals with dementia by focusing on their abilities rather than disabilities. It allows them to express themselves and make choices, fostering a sense of independence and self-worth. As a community we continue to engage or residents in all forms of art and expression, among many other activities. We hope to see you all at next years ArtWalk.

Willamette Valley Healthcare Workforce Survey

In an effort to assist employers in the healthcare sector of our area, Willamette Workforce Partnership has created an industry survey specific to our region (Marion, Polk, Yamhill, & Linn Counties). We hope you have a few minutes to complete it and can share it with partners and providers you work with. The link is open through 5pm on November 18th. The results will help inform the partnership work addressing workforce shortages.  You may access the survey by clicking the image below, scanning the QR code with your smartphone, or by clicking here.

The goal of this survey is to identify challenges in recruitment, retention, and finding workers who have the needed skills. Through this project, WWP hopes to:

  • Identify the skills needed and local conditions that may make hiring difficult
  • Provide information about the “how and why” behind workforce demand signals
  • Engage the full network of stakeholders needed to identify and solve workforce problems
